What is Intel(R) Active Management Technology - SOL (Serial Over LAN) Driver?

Intel(R) Active Management Technology (AMT) is part of Intel's vPro platform and is designed to allow IT administrators to remotely manage and troubleshoot computers, even if the operating system is down or the system is powered off. Serial Over LAN (SOL) is one of the key features of Intel AMT, which allows an administrator to remotely access and interact with a system's console (as if they were physically present at the machine) over the network, using a serial console interface.

Intel(R) Active Management Technology - SOL driver is the software that enables communication between the host operating system and Intel AMT hardware. It is often required for businesses or IT environments where remote management of systems is necessary, especially when systems are not responsive due to OS crashes or other issues.

Key Features of Intel AMT and SOL:

  1. Remote Management: Allows IT staff to manage PCs remotely, even when the OS is not running.
  2. Out-of-Band Management: The system can be managed over the network, even if the operating system is unresponsive or the system is powered off (as long as the machine is plugged in and connected to the network).
  3. Remote Power Control: IT administrators can power the system on or off, reset the system, or access the system’s BIOS remotely.
  4. KVM (Keyboard, Video, Mouse) Redirection: Allows remote control of the system as if the administrator were sitting right in front of it, using a keyboard, mouse, and display.

The SOL driver is specifically responsible for enabling the Serial Over LAN functionality, which provides remote access to the machine's serial port for troubleshooting and configuration purposes.
